Matrescence and Maternality

I am curating two group shows for Richard Saltoun Gallery in London around the theme of maternal embodiment and experience. The first opens in November 2019 , with the title of Matrescence– a term drawn from anthropology to name the transitional processes of becoming a mother. This shows features work dealing with maternal identity as well as loss and obsolescence, and the politics of visualising maternal embodiment for example giving birth or breastfeeding and how this is often censored or demonised. The second show in January focuses on the materiality of maternal bodies, and the way in which maternal experience can interrupt hegemonic structures such as patriarchal capitalism.
